Foods and Nutrition: Dietetics Major/ Exercise Science Minor

I wanted to add this section to show why I am interested in nutrition and to give a idea of who I am as a person. I have included my history, interests, hobbies, and awards I have recieved.
A Little Bit About Me
Growing up in a traveling family, I had always been exposed to bizarre foods. I was never the picky eater that most kids were (I remember trying alligator when I was 6 years old). Never knowing how to interpret my food interest, it wasn't until after shadowing a sports dietitian in high school that I realized my love for nutrition. This realization became stronger after I saw how diets positively and negatively influenced the health of several family members. I then became fascinated with the alternative effects of food and made my decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition while minoring in exercise science. While nutrition facts are important, I have learned to look past these components and recognize the alternative benefits presented in foods. I am a believer that food has more to offer than calories, and accept that health is a total body concept, taking on a "food is medicine" philosophy, integrating holistic approaches into my personal beliefs.

This "food is medicine" philosophy then led to me becoming interested in the culinary world. I mean, what better way to implement this idea than to actually cook beneficial meals? After a while of practicing in the kitchen on my own, I decided I wanted to experience a "real" kitchen. I researched facilities that I could see myself one day working at and spontaneously emailed the executive chef, asking if he would be interested in having an unpaid intern. Not expecting to hear anything back, I surprisingly got a quick response! We set up a meeting, and before I knew it, I was working in this elaborate, upscale, professional kitchen! The experience has had more impact on my career goals than any other experience I have had.

I hope to one day be able to fuse my two passions of nutrition and culinary arts into my career. For fun, I started this food blog in which I post about restaurants I have eaten at as well as my personal recipes, whether they be healthy or indulgent.

Special Interests
Outside of nutrition and the culinary arts, I have a few unique interests. One is exercise. As an exercise science minor, I love learning about new ways to be physically active. To me, exercise is the best outlet for stress. whenever I am feeling overwhelmed, nothing helps quite like a good workout! On September 1st, 2013, I became a Licensed Zumba Fitness instructor. This interest also translates into the sports world too! I adore watching or playing a good competitive game or match.

Traveling is another exclusive interest of mine. As I mentioned in the earlier section, I grew up in a family that did and still does a lot of traveling. Not only do I enjoy doing the typical tourist things, but I absolutely love submersing myself into a new culture. It is so interesting to me how different people are. It is my goal to visit as many countries as I can in my lifetime.

I have always seen the Olympics as being the ultimate fusion of exercise, nutrition, and traveling! I would absolutely love to go to the Olympic games one day, Winter or Summer. I can strongly relate to both Winter and Summer sports.
Hobbies
The most obvious hobby of mine would be cooking, but another hobby would be intramural sports at Appalachian State. I play on volleyball and soccer teams with other Appalachian students. Like I mentioned before, I love a good competition! I also discovered a passion for snowboarding and other winter sports while at school at Appalachian. If I were to ever relocate to the right environment, I could easily see myself joining an adult snowboard team.

I also like blogging. Being such a huge "foodie," I blog about restaurants I have eaten at as well as my own personal recipes that I create.
Awards
The awards in which I am most proud of would be getting on the Dean's list. To be included on the list, a student must either be enrolled for 12 to 14 hours of course work for which quality points are computed and attain a grade point average of 3.45 or better, or be enrolled for a minimum of 15 hours of course workfor which quality points are computed and attain a grade point average of 3.25 or better. I have been on Appalachian's Dean's List consecutively since the Fall semester of my sophomore year.
After my senior year, I was listed on the Chancellor's list for having a GPA greater that 3.85! I was extremely proud of this accomplishment.
